Scarves: Warming up and Staying Chic
Scarves are essential for staying stylishly chic while keeping warm as cool fall breezes transition into cold wintery snowstorms. Luckily, scarves are incredibly easy to make, and you can use a variety of different fabrics depending on how much warmth the unpredictable fall to winter weather calls for. From lightweight linens to chunky wool knits, having a wide array of scarves is the perfect way to easily switch up your style from day to day, even if you’re wearing the same jacket.
Linen
Even though it doesn’t immediately come to mind as a scarf fabric, linen is a wonderful choice for those warmer winter days, offering just a hint of extra warmth, but a large dash of elegant style.
Plaid
A medium weight, fuzzy 100% acrylic plaid scarf is one of the major essentials – the design never goes out of style and the napped acrylic fabric is super cozy and comfortable. You can wear it wrapped around your neck under your jacket on cooler days, or draped over your shoulders as an outerwear piece for warmer days.
Chunky Knit
Chunky wool knits are wonderful for those blustery winter days when you’d rather stay at home wrapped up in a blanket by the fire but the day’s responsibilities drag you out to battle against the outdoor elements. Super comfortable, chunky knits provide incredible warmth while still allowing air to flow through to the skin so you don’t have to worry about overheating.
Cashmere
There is no fabric more luxurious for a winter scarf than 100% cashmere. This super soft, highly sought after fine wool is light/medium weight, yet has the warmth of a heavy wool, without the bulk or scratchy feel.
Houndstooth Double-Knit
Houndstooth is a timeless pattern in the fashion realm. Extremely easy to pair, especially when in the classic black-and-white color scheme, houndstooth makes for a perfect winter scarf. Try a houndstooth polyester double knit for extra warmth.
Faux Fur/Pelt
Get the elegant look and lavish feel of an animal pelt without getting on PETA’s blacklist with a faux fur, synthetic fuzzy fabric. Choose from mink gray to snow rabbit white, cheetah or leopard, or go for a more artificial look by opting for a bold blue or royal purple; this year, anything goes.
Denim for [Fall] Days
There has been a lot of discussion about fall outerwear this season on the Fashion Fabrics Club blog, and the trend continues this week with a focus on denim. Being a highly versatile and classically stylish piece, the denim jacket has proved itself as an all-time favorite fall coat among both men and women, so this week features a variety of denim jackets styles that are perfect for fall weather.
Whoever said you can’t wear white after Labor Day didn’t understand the chic look of a crisp white denim jacket on a cool fall day. For ladies, a medium-weight white denim jacket can extend a summer dress into fall wear with a scarf and/or boots. Men can dress up their luxe sweatpants or create an eye-catching contrast by pairing their white denim jacket with a pair of classy, dark wash jeans.
For casual fall outings that still require a fashionable, albeit relaxed look, a classic blue jean jacket fits the bill. Whether in a stiff, structured dark navy blue denim or a soft, relaxed lighter wash denim, the blue jean jacket has the perfect mix of classic coolness and modern chicness that gives it a breadth of versatility that is only paralleled by its blue jean pants counterpart.
Gray denim jackets have become particularly popular as of late, and it’s no wonder why. The neutral gray shade adds a hint of modernity to the classic piece, makes it extremely easy to pair with nearly any other color, and gives it a dressier look than the conventional blue jean jacket without compromising comfort – a win all around.
For a more casual look with more arm mobility and added warmth for cooler fall days, you can opt for a medium weight knit-sleeved, hooded denim jacket. This style gives the appearance of a denim vest over a sweatshirt hoodie, however the jacket is actually much less cumbersome, void of the added padding in the midsection – a perfect pick for fall.
If you want your denim jacket to be able to accompany you into the beginnings of the winter season, a classic black denim jacket with a faux shearling lining is the perfect style for you. You could either go with a matching black or contrasting white lining, either way you will be warm and cozy and classically chic.
Autumn Outerwear for Men
Autumn is by far the most fun season for outerwear. From lightweight denim jackets to wool pea coats, the capricious fall weather always keeps us guessing as to what the next day will have in store for our jacketing needs. In order from lightweight to heavyweight, Fashion Fabrics Club provides you with a gamut of men’s fall coats, complete with links to fabrics.
Trucker Jacket
A classic and more rugged style of coat, the trucker jacket is a great pick for fall days of leaf raking or taking the family out to the local pumpkin patch. The classic denim look will never go out of style, but corduroy has also been finding its way into the trucker jacket look lately. For cooler days, try a lined trucker jacket with either a lightweight flannel or fuzzy Sherpa fleece.
Trench Coat
Ranging from medium weight cotton twills to heavier wool blends, the trench is perfect for cool, rainy fall days. A classic men’s coat style that transcends time, trends, and context, the trench can be worn to the office, or on your way to meet friends for after work drinks. The classic trench has been a mainstay in men’s wardrobes for decades and will continue to be for decades to come.
Flannel
Comfortable, almost sweatshirt like, the classic flannel is known as the workingman’s favorite jacket. Allowing ease in arm mobility and airflow, the flannel is great for working outdoors.
Top Coat
A lighter weight wool blend coat that works great for pairing over a suit blazer, the top coat is an essential outerwear garment for the business man. Coming in a variety of lapels, collars and pocket detailing, you can chose which one best fits your style.
Fleece
Super warm and cozy, made from a napped polyester fabric, the fleece coat is a staple in men’s wardrobes because it can be worn alone for more causal outings, or used as an extra layer of warmth and comfort underneath another, more formal jacket.
Varsity Jacket
The varsity jacket has a boyish charm and collegiate attitude that will keep it in men’s closets for decades to come. Coming in a variety of fabrics from cotton/polyester blends to wools, varsity jackets are perfect for cool fall days for the athletically inclined to wear to their tag football games, or for wearing on game day, sitting bleacher side rooting on your favorite team.
Moto Jacket
The moto jacket is no longer reserved only for bandana wearing Harley owners. In fact, the moto is now offered in a variety of other fabrics besides leather, like sweater knit and black denim, but still maintaining that classic rebel look.
Pea Coat
The pea coat is a classic style that every man should have in his closet, despite age, career or style. Usually in a wool blend, the pea coat comes in a variety of styles from single to double breasted, so no matter what your size, you can find a pea coat that will flatter your shape.

Fun Fabrics for Fall Jackets
You can never have too many jackets, especially in the fall. You need a variety of different weighted overcoats, some lightweight for warmer days and some heavier weight for cooler days, even in the span of just a week; autumn weather is always keeping us on our toes. For that reason, fall jackets come in all shapes and sizes and in a number of different fabrics. Here are some fun fall jackets from this year’s fashionable collections, along with links to similar fabrics from Fashion Fabrics Club so you can make your own versions at home!
Faux Fur Coats
Faux fur is a hot fabric for this fall’s jackets. Ranging from quirky bold colors like blue/black faux fur to animal prints like leopard print beige faux fur, imitation furs are perfect for short length jackets, are a fun addition to an outfit, and are super fuzzy and comfortable – the perfect combination.
Wool Jackets
A lighter weighted wool jacket is an essential fall outwear garment, whether in a short or long length. Try to chunky boucle yarn like dark brown boucle jacketing or a lightweight tweed like brown wool tweed jacketing for a more sophisticated look.
Knitted Jackets
Instead of throwing on an old sweatshirt hoodie on chilly days, opt for an equally cozy sweater knit zip-up jacket. Knitted jackets will provide you with just as much comfort and mobility as your favorite sweatshirt while still maintaining a stylish and put-together look. Try a sophisticated blue like sky blue sweater knit, royal blue sweater knit as in this Caslon zip-up.

Denim
Denim jackets were huge this summer, and they are continuing their popularity into fall being paired with everything from dresses to the most casual of jeans. Try a dark blue shade of denim like dark blue denim, navy blue denim to easily pair with other pieces in your wardrobe.
Milan Fashion Week
As the summer sunshine dwindles and cool breezes and colorful autumn leaves prevail, the international fashion shows have been keeping the summer fun alive showing off designer collections for Spring/Summer 2015. The Italian designers showed an eclectic mélange of themes in their collections at last week’s Milan Fashion Week (MFW) with nostalgia, romance, comfort, and power dressing making an appearance on the runways. Here is a breakdown of the top trends from MFW that we can look forward to for next spring as we start to bundle up for fall.
Sheer fabrics continue their time in the limelight, but in the MFW collections, they get a romantic makeover – rather than being used for an overt sex appeal that we’ve seen heretofore. Blumarine and Alberta Ferretti used flowing sheer fabrics in pastel and other light colors often with floral embroideries and 3 dimensional floral appliques in their feminine, romantic collections.
Monochromic ensembles were a common look seen parading down the MFW runways, particularly white-on-white, a color that is forecasted to be a big trend of the spring 2015 season.
Color blocking was another common trend among the Italian fashion designers, a continuation from past seasons. The colors used were in a vast array from big, bright and bold colors (as in the case of Dsquared2) to more subtle neutrals (like Jil Sander’s collection).
Culottes are making a comeback – they started to show up this past summer, but if MFW is any indication (which, of course, it is), culottes and other wide-legged trousers will be in a full-blown fad by next summer. And lucky for us… so comfortable and super easy to sew!
The far out fabrics, groovy prints and hippie styles from the 1970s were in full-fledged fashion at Milan, showing up as key elements in a number of designer’s collections. Designers like Marco de Vincenzo, Proenza Schouler, and Etro used psychedelic prints, fringed suede, and leather with intricate ornamentation reminiscent of the ‘70s like beading, macramé, and crochet.
A mainstay classic, denim appeared in a number of collections at MFW. This spring, expect to see a variety of wide-legged, cropped denim bottoms stocking the retailers shelves.
The Italian designers of MFW dressed up denim using lace panels, floral appliques, brocade and rhinestones to adorn distressed and ripped denim; a fun and quirky juxtaposition to look forward to for next spring!
Flirty Fall Frocks
Flirty frocks are all the rage this fall. These simple dresses are super comfortable, easy to pair, and great for layering. Put them with a pair of textured tights, tall boots and a long cardi for cool days and a pair of shooties and a light scarf for warmer days – the options are nearly endless. Here are a few of our favorite frocks in this fall’s trending fabrics, patterns and prints.
Geometric patterned longed sleeved frocks are huge this fall. They look especially great in an above-the-knee length and are being seen in both a loose, draped shape and also in more form fitting silhouettes in polyester/Lycra blend fabrics like white/purple geometric jersey knit and white geometric jersey knit.
These solid colored, slinky chiffon frocks are great for cool weather months – they have the perfect balance of short skirts and long sleeves. These dresses work well with tall boots, scarves, chunky necklaces, and accent belts. They are super easy to pair due to their solid color and are the perfect weight for fall – the polyester fabric allows the dress to be light weight, but still keeps the wearer warm. Try them in fun, fall colors like mocha/gold two-tone chiffon, dark orange chiffon, and yellow crinkled chiffon.
Sweater dresses are a classic go-to fall to winter look. They are by far the most comfortable dresses to wear made from a super fuzzy fabric and can be worn in a myriad of ways; with scarves, boots, tights, and flats. You can’t go wrong with a sweater dress whether in the sweatshirt, jersey knit style like black/grey sweater knit, smoke black sweater knit, or pewter grey sweater knit or in a chunky intricate knit.
The classic shirt dress in a chambray like teal blue chambray shirting, or light denim like ivory denim and dark blue denim is another perfect go-to for fall. They come in a variety of styles from a loose, oversized shirt look to a more feminine cinched waist dress, but no matter the style, shirt dresses look perfect with any number of footwear from casual boots to dressy wedges, and can be mixed and matched with different accessories to dress them up or down for nearly any occasion.
NY Fashion Week Fabrics & Prints
From gorgeous gingham to 60s psychedelics to flirty feminine florals, the Spring/Summer 2015 collections shown at last week’s New York Fashion Week (NYFW) were screaming with style and bursting with color. Here are some of our top favorite fabrics and prints we saw strutting down the runway:
Gingham
Gingham got a girly makeover at NYFW. Many designers incorporated this traditional check into sleek, feminine silhouettes in a range of fun colors like reddish orange/white gingham, turquoise gingham, red gingham, blue gingham, navy gingham, and lime gingham.
Poplin
Tibi gave the ever-popular poplin fabric a romantic twist by constructing feminine dresses and blouses out of the strong shirting fabric.
Floral
Flirty, feminine floral patterns continue to be a fashionable mainstay, making an appearance in multiple designers’ collections in knee-length sheath and daytime dresses.
Psychedelic 60s Patterns
Jeremy Scott teamed up with the funky singer/actress Miley Cyrus for his collection at NYFW this year. The result? A psychedelic 60s rainbow flower-power teenage explosion.
Tropical Prints
Elizabeth and James turned quirky tropical prints into sophisticated styles by paring down the traditional bright colors (and using more subdued hues like raspberry minky tropical and dark sapphire minky tropical) and combining them with other patterns in one outfit – a clear trend across the NYFW board.
Sequins and 3D Florals
Sequined 3-dimensional flowers attached to flowing mesh fabrics like soft pink stretch mesh were a popular girlish element in the collection of Michael Kors, who often paired the highly texturized fabric with streamlined conservative button-up shirts.
Multi Directional Stripes
Designers like J Crew had an interesting take on stripes at NYFW (a leftover trend from previous season’s fashions), combining multidirectional stripes in one outfit and often times even in one garment.
Raw Silk
Luxurious raw silks in neutral colors like golden tan silk dupioni, cream silk dupioni and ivory silk dupioni were carefully crafted by designer The Row into gorgeous draping gowns and billowing silhouettes.
Colored Leopard Print
Last but not least, leopard continues its status as a MVP in the trending prints arena, appearing in fun colors like purple leopard print jersey knit and beige/fuschia leopard double knit.

Trend Report - Fall 2014 Couture
Couture collections are always the most grandiose of all the fashion runway shows, displaying ornate designs with exaggerated styles, highly intricate detailing and the most exquisite tailoring. Even though the high fashion designers who showed collections at the fall 2014 couture shows this summer had a diverse array of inspirational sources and differed immensely in mood and schema, they managed to have many similar design details when it came to color and prints. Here is Fashion Fabrics Club’s break down of the trending elements from the fall 2014 couture shows, providing you with links to similar fabrics for your convenience.
Color
The colors of the fall couture collections were as rich as the luxurious materials they adorned. In particular, vibrant reds, from deep crimson to bright scarlet, and saturated blues in a range of navy and royal hues were seen as either the focal point or accent color for pieces in almost every designer’s collection. Canary yellow and turquoise were also popular among this fall’s high fashion couture collections. However, the most popular color scheme was, unquestionably, the classic pairing of black-and-white; a crossover from seasons passed.
Red – red duchess silk satin and burgundy silk duchess satin
Navy – navy blue silk taffeta, and navy blue silk duchess satin
Turquoise – turquoise silk duchess satin, turquoise silk crepe back satin, and turquoise silk satin organza
Black – black silk duchess satin, black satin back shantung, and black satin
Prints
There were some clear winners in the category of prints and patterns in the fall couture collections this year as well. Angular, symmetrical patterns like stripes (especially in black-and-white and with sheer detailing like black silk chiffon and white chiffon), polka dot patterns on sheer fabrics (see black polka dot stretch mesh, black/white polka dot chiffon, black/white polka dot chiffon) and solid geometric prints (see white/black jersey knit, pink geometric charmeuse, and black sparkle slinky) were seen in about half of the collections shown.
The rest of the collections had a focus that was more fluid, with natural patterns like varied animal prints (particularly leopard and cheetah prints in flowing semi-sheer fabrics like grey/black crinkled chiffon, charcoal/black cheetah chiffon and sage/black print crinkled chiffon) and floral motifs (especially in rich brocades like black floral brocade, ivory eversong brocade and wine eversong brocade).
